What is the purpose of the sustainable tourism fund?

  • The fund is used to subsidise Sustainable Tourism projects which have the objective of environmental development and protection, the promotion of sustainable tourism, the recovery of historical heritage, scientific research, the promotion of training and employment, and the acquisition and rehabilitation of housing for social renting.

  • Protecting our surroundings is protecting our future.

This includes projects aimed at preserving and regenerating natural areas, both terrestrial and marine, as well as the traditional agricultural landscape. Among the actions planned are the recovery of degraded or sensitive areas, the modernisation of farms and agricultural areas to make them more sustainable and the promotion of renewable energies together with measures to reduce emissions. The improvement of public transport and the promotion of non-polluting mobility options are also envisaged. On the other hand, investments are earmarked to optimise the water cycle through reuse systems, desalination processes, savings and efficiency. All with the aim of guaranteeing that future generations will also be able to enjoy green, blue and healthy islands.

  • Enhancing local talent for sustainable tourism.

The aim is to strengthen the human capital of the islands. To this end, it finances training programmes for professionals in the tourism sector, projects that promote job placement and improve the quality of employment, as well as professional retraining and training in sustainability. Because the quality of tourism also depends on the quality of the people who make it possible.

  • To promote fair and balanced access to housing.

ITS funds can also contribute to alleviating the effects that tourism has on residents' access to housing. This includes projects that increase the stock of public or social housing, as well as support for initiatives that facilitate access to decent housing for vulnerable groups or in areas with strong tourist pressure. This is a way of ensuring that the islands remain a habitable place for all.

  • The islands are alive all year round.

This area funds initiatives that seek to extend the tourist season and reduce dependence on the summer months. Support is given to tourism projects that can be enjoyed all year round, such as hiking, cycle tourism, culture, gastronomy, health and wellbeing. At the same time, the infrastructure that supports these projects, such as paths, interpretation centres and sports facilities, is improved. These actions promote a more stable economy that spreads opportunities more evenly throughout the year and throughout the territory.

  • A fairer, safer and more balanced model.

This purpose encompasses actions that promote harmonious coexistence between tourism and local society. This includes initiatives against illegal tourism, improving inspection and security systems in tourist areas and awareness-raising campaigns on sustainability and respect for the environment. It also finances social cohesion projects that contribute to improving the quality of life in the neighbourhoods most affected by tourism. Because good tourism is tourism that takes care of the place it visits.
