This project aims to provide public a network of public sewers to the Es Ca Marí hub, located in the southwest of the island of Formentera. This infrastructure will prevent leaks and clogging, and will allow the reuse of reclaimed water for crop irrigation.

Es Ca Marí is number two on the list of centres with the most tourist beds in Formentera. However, the tourist establishments and private homes do not have a direct connection to the sewage network, but have their own sewage treatment plants in the case of tourism companies, and septic tanks in the case of private individuals.
The lack of connection to the general sewerage network means that the septic tanks have to be emptied by lorry, and the wastewater that arrives at the treatment plant is of very poor quality and cannot be regenerated and reused for irrigation.
This project involves the building of a municipal sewer network that will collect wastewater from the area for subsequent connection to the island’s general sewage system and the Formentera’s wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The replacement of existing materials with more efficient and sustainable ones will prevent leaks, clogging and rainwater permeability.
In addition, the project foresees the acquisition of land for the installation of an intermediate pumping point. There will also be a connection to the general system in order to reach the Formentera’s WWTP and then the irrigation pond so that the water can be reused, which will benefit the primary sector and the production on the island. The amount of water leaving the outfall will also be reduced, helping to protect marine biodiversity.
This is a project agreed upon by residents, one that will directly benefit a total of 2,268 people, both tourists and residents, 20% of the total summer resident population.
