As in the rest of Europe, the current economy in the Balearic Islands, based on the model of extracting, producing, consuming and throwing away, leads to two major problems – the generation of huge amounts of waste, and a shortage of raw materials. The aim of this project is to boost the transition towards a circular economy, where waste and waste materials are brought back into the production process, thus closing the circle.
The first announcement of grants using the Sustainable Tourism Tax from 2017 led to 13 activities being subsidised in relation to the reuse, recycling, recovery and reduction of tourist waste. In total, these measures were applied to more than six thousand tons of waste, and more than 60 jobs were created for people at risk of exclusion.
The aim of this new round of subsidies is to continue to support initiatives that help bring about this change of model. This change is towards a more sustainable model in both environmental and social terms, where waste management plays a particularly prominent role.
