The pressure of holiday rentals in Ibiza Town has reduced access to residential housing. To tackle this issue, the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia is launching a specific action plan against illegal holiday properties. This is one of the areas of the island most affected by unlawful practices in tourism.
The plan foresees the recruitment of a team of local police officers, management experts, inspectors and administrative staff, who will reinforce the surveillance and monitoring of unauthorised activities. Measures planned include an increase in the number of sanctioning proceedings and the provisional closure of properties that do not comply with urban planning regulations.
The plan is inspired by models already applied in other cities such as Barcelona and Valencia, where inspections are combined with effective sanctions. The plan also provides for the purchase of vehicles and technical equipment, as well as computer equipment and uniforms for the staff involved.
A range of objectives are pursued: to discourage illegal practices, free up housing for residential use and reinforce the legal security of the destination. The plan will run from 2025 to 2027, and will be carried out alongside the Island Council of Ibiza to ensure a comprehensive approach throughout the island.
