IBANAT is to update key equipment for fire prevention and maintenance in natural areas

What does it consist of?

The Balearic Nature Institute (IBANAT) is modernising its machinery to improve the prevention of forest fires and the maintenance of natural areas across the four islands. The project targets outdated equipment and the need to reinforce the capacity to respond to storms, fires and other events linked to climate change.

The project

The management of natural areas in the Balearic Islands largely depends on the operational capacity of the Balearic Nature Institute. IBANAT plays a key role in the prevention and extinction of forest fires, conservation of public property and maintenance of lodges, recreational areas and paths. To sustain this activity, the institute needs to progressively renew its machinery, which is now partially obsolete.

The project will see the incorporation of new forestry, farming and multi-purpose equipment to enable faster and safer action in forestry treatments, preventive work and emergencies. It also includes light trucks with cranes, trailers and public works machinery to move biomass, maintain roads, upgrade public spaces and clear up after storms and other extreme events.

One of the most critical areas is fire fighting vehicles, which play a central role in responding to forest fires. The renewal of this fleet aims to make conditions safer for staff and firefighting operations more efficient. Meanwhile, the project will also see the temporary recruitment of an industrial engineer and a lawyer to reinforce the administrative and technical management of the related tenders.

Beyond day-to-day operations, the investment also targets better land management. A more modern and efficient fleet of machinery will allow better maintenance of natural areas, ensure their accessibility and strengthen the capacity to react to increasing risks. Against a backdrop of longer drought periods, more severe weather events and greater pressure on the island, this update is intended as a tool for adaptation and prevention in the medium term.
