The project

In general, agricultural activities are very important for managing natural resources and, organic farming, in particular, is especially important for controlling the biodiversity in these spaces. Not using pesticides and synthetic fertilizers helps to mitigate the effects of climate change while protecting the quality of the water and soil of the Balearic Islands.

At present, all of the funds from aid lines related to this issue are included in two tenders lasting five years each: the 2015-2019 tender and the 2016-2020 tender. This means that new farmers do not have the possibility of joining any aid scheme, since there will be no new tenders launched until 2019 due to a lack of funds.

The solution to this problem would be to have the required and sufficient funds to be able to meet the needs of these new producers who, at present, cannot benefit from the aid. In addition, it should be taken into account that organic farming has undergone an important growth in the Balearic Islands in recent years, as well as the potential market for the resulting products.

The objective of this project has been planned by taking this premise into account and it consists of providing financial resources to measure 11.2 of the Rural Development Program (PDR) 2014-2020 to allow the entry of new farmers and cattle breeders who practise organic farming, given that in recent years it has been detected that it is not possible to meet the growing demand due to the lack of economic means.
