Public forests: improvement of the forest landscape (in forests used by the public and other listed forest landscapes of the Balearic Islands)

What does it consist of?

The project consists of taking action on the holm oak, pine and garrigue areas located in the mountains used by the public and owned by the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, with the purpose of adapting forests to climate change and allowing them to increase their resilience to global warming.

The project

There is an urgent need for an action plan to limit the damage caused to the indigenous forests (holm oaks, pine and garrigue) on the islands by the severe alterations they are currently experiencing (drought, abandonment, introduction of exotic species, forest fires, etc.). The restoration of the degraded areas of these forests that have been unable to recover their arboreal stratum due to erosion, predators, alterations or fire is also necessary.

This is the reason behind this project involving the improvement of forest formations in order to be able to deal with the conservation of the island landscape and its adaptation to climate change. Activity will initially take place in the forests located in the public properties of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands as well as in more unique areas in forest habitats present in the mountain regions of the islands.

Activities are expected to take place in the holm oak, pine and garrigue areas located in the mountains used by the public and owned by the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands (Menut and Binifaldó, Son Moragues, Planícia, Son Real, Mortitx, etc., 96% in Mallorca, 2% in Menorca and 2% in Ibiza and Formentera), where silvicultural treatments will take place to ensure their conservation, improvement and protection against the risk of lack of regeneration, the loss of land or the danger of forest fires.

The restoration and upgrading of the wooded vegetation cover are considered essential to ensure the continuance of public forest formations, with this project therefore proposing silvicultural work over a 125 hectare area (clearing, pruning, supporting the natural regeneration, removing regrowth, preventive treatments against erosion, snow or fire, etc.) in accordance with the provisions of the Balearic Islands’ Forestry Plan. (Approved by Decree 11/2015, dated 20 March).
