Supporting traditional agriculture to preserve the rural landscape

Crop diversification and replanting of fruit trees to preserve the agricultural environment and mitigate climate change

What does it consist of?

Given the progressive abandonment of traditional farms, a new grant programme encourages sustainable farming practices, such as multi-cropping or replanting fruit trees, to safeguard the rural landscape and the environmental benefits it generates. More than 1,200 farms could benefit from these measures.

The project

The agricultural landscape is an essential component of the rural environment and ecological balance. Nevertheless, in recent years, many traditional farms have been affected by urban development pressure, lack of generational replacement and the effects of climate change. To counteract this trend, a programme has been set up to promote environmentally friendly farming practices and foster the resilience of the territory.

The plan envisages two main lines of action. The first focuses on diversifying crops on sustainable traditional farms by means of financial support that recognises the environmental services provided by farmers. Requirements include maintaining the agroforestry mosaic, maintaining plant cover to prevent erosion, and encouraging crop rotation or the presence of livestock.

The second line prioritises the replanting of native fruit trees, which are heavily affected by drought, pests and diseases. The grants will cover between 20 and 30 euros per tree, with the aim of renewing around 40,000 trees in total. This measure aims to curb the abandonment of farms and contribute to the recovery of biodiversity and agricultural productivity.

It is estimated that the programme could benefit around 1,200 farms, with a total budget of 6 million euros. The calls for applications are adjusted to the agronomic rhythms, in such a way that planting and actions can be carried out within the optimal periods, with staggered implementation between 2023 and 2024. The grants are also in line with the European regulatory framework on agriculture and the environment.
