Complete Remodelling of the Porreres Wastewater Treatment Plant

The project improves the sewage network and adapts the WWTP to current regulations

What does it consist of?

Porreres wastewater treatment plant has been extended in response to a need pending since 2007: to adapt the facilities to population growth, the Balearic Water Plan and the process of separating the networks. The works sought to improve wastewater treatment and prevent rainwater from entering the system.

The project

The municipality of Porreres has seen major changes to its sewage infrastructure with the extension and remodelling of its treatment plant. These works, financed with public funds, respond to a need identified in 2007, but which had been put on hold for economic reasons. The relaunch of the project in 2016 meant it could be redesigned in line with new legal and technical standards.

One of the main goals has been to complete the process of separating wastewater and stormwater networks. To this end, a new collector has been built to collect wastewater only, thus preventing rainwater from entering the WWTP and improving the system’s performance. This separate network, already in place in a large part of the urban area, now has a fully operational infrastructure.

The project has also seen the complete remodelling of the existing facilities. The plant now has the capacity required to handle the volume generated by the current and future population, in addition to adapting it to the level of treatment required by the regulations. This includes treatment systems that ensure treated waste is discharged in line with health and environmental standards.

Building the proper infrastructure for the treated effluent makes it possible to close the water cycle under optimal conditions. These works not only improve the quality of service in Porreres, but also help to meet the standards of the Balearic Water Plan, making the system more sustainable and reducing the environmental impact of water treatment.
