This project is based on the carrying out of a series of repair works in order to put into action the canal and the mills of the hydraulic system of the Galatzó estate to make the most of the water that, up to now, has been wasted. Likewise, this project has an added value since it aims to recover a unique element within the ethnological heritage of the Balearic Islands.
The Galatzó public estate, located close to the urban area of Es Capdellà (Calvià), lies on the borders of the municipalities of Puigpunyent, Andratx and Estellencs. The 14,013,500 m2 area is one of the largest estates on the Balearic Islands and its area covers approximately 10% of the municipality of Calvià.
It also holds a rich ethnographic heritage, since there are a large number of elements devoted to agricultural, livestock and forestry resources. For this reason, the hydraulic elements of the estate are extremely important in its infrastructure, as they are its heritage and they are also responsible for collecting groundwater for drainage.
Among the main objectives of this project, on the one hand, it is necessary to stop the deterioration and the none use of the hydraulic system, highlighted as being unique in the area and, on the other hand, adapting the exceptional hydraulic system for public visits, showing it as an eminently representative example of a significant type of construction of a Mallorcan tradition that is in danger of disappearing. Another important objective is to maintain and improve both the agricultural and livestock areas and the forest, in addition to preserving the traditional uses that have characterised the place where it is located: the Serra de Tramuntana.
