Renovation, extension, automation and digital management of the reclaimed water network in the coastal area of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.

Improvement of the reclaimed water network irrigation and cleaning in coastal areas, significantly reducing drinking water consumption.

What does it consist of?

By way of this project the council aims to renew and extend the network of pipes for irrigation with reclaimed water from the Sa Coma wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), so that it can then maximise the use of reclaimed water. All of this will be ensured under optimal flow and pressure conditions, without interruptions.

The project

This action is needed so the trees and all green areas in the coastal urban areas of the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar can be irrigated with reclaimed water. By the same token, it is also possible to use reclaimed water for street cleaning instead of relying on drinking water.

The project is in line with and contributes to the objectives of the annual Extraordinary Plan for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism, specifically the priority objective outlined in Article 3(2.a): Protection, preservation, modernisation and recovery of the natural, rural, agricultural and marine environment.

Main objectives

With the project underway, the Sant Llorenç des Cardassar Town Council wants to:

  • Extend the reclaimed water network so it can irrigate more areas.
  • Create a mesh network for increased security and to ensure proper functioning.
  • Minimise leaks in the network within the replaced sections.
  • Increase the operating pressure of the entire network, with the possibility of irrigating at adequate pressures in the most remote areas where the pressure is not enough.
  • Have information on flow rates for three sectors with improvements in leakage and consumption control.
  • Have online pressure sensors in order to improve network management, easing troubleshooting.
  • Facilitate online transmission of consumption data and maintain a history for monitoring the system.
  • Contribute to making the costs of water reclamation treatment cost-effective.
  • Contribute to the availability of good quality water for irrigation as well as other uses for utilities, hotels and other establishments, at a lower cost and with a lower environmental impact than using drinking water.

It is worth noting that using reclaimed water for irrigation helps prevent an additional peak in drinking water consumption during the summer.

Description

The network laid out in this project begins at the junction of Calle Mare Selva and Avenida Palmeras and will serve the northern part of the urban area of Sa Coma.

It includes reclaimed water pipes in the urban area of Sa Coma, on Mare Selva, Garrover, Tamarell, Mimosas, and Eucalipto streets.

In total, the project will include 487 metres of PE-100 polyethylene piping with a nominal diameter of 200 mm and a nominal pressure of 10 bar, as well as 1,390 metres of PE-100 polyethylene piping with a nominal diameter of 160 mm and a nominal pressure of 10 bar.
