The project is focused on the restoration of the walls that belong to the central part of the city of Alcúdia, which has been declared a Historic Artistic Site. The objective of this project is to consolidate part of the historical and cultural heritage of the island of Mallorca, which is perfectly outlined in one of the priority actions of the Annual Plan for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism "Recovery and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Heritage".
The sections of the walls to be restored form part of the military architecture monuments and are considered a Cultural Interest Asset (BIC - Bien de Interés Cultural), as well as being included in the catalogue of the Historical and Artistic Heritage of the Rural Environment and Urban Land, with an "A" rated degree of protection that is classified as the category of full protection.
Therefore, on the one hand, there is a legal requirement to preserve these monuments, which due to their characteristics, are considered as being of cultural interest, and on the other hand, there is no doubt that the action would be of social and economic interest given the repercussions that maintaining the walls in the appropriate state would have on the tourist environment.
Based on the abovementioned, it can be seen that the project is of supra-municipal interest, since even though the work affects a single municipal area, its impact would transcend this area given its magnitude and importance. The medieval site attracts thousands of tourists, not only from the local population, but from the entire island. In addition, it is also an attraction both for sun and beach tourists and for those interested in learning about the culture and traditions of the Balearic Islands.
