The Can Serra building, located in the heart of Palma, is a unique example of Gothic houses in Majorca. The rehabilitation project seeks to preserve this Asset of Cultural Interest and to integrate it into the City History Museum network, a project that aims to unify several buildings and monuments into a single tour on local history. This way, the aim is to raise awareness among the population and visitors of the importance of heritage as an element of cultural identity and to consolidate Palma as a leading cultural tourism destination.

The Can Serra building is unique on the island of Majorca. It stands out for its historical, architectural and artistic relevance. It preserves medieval elements of great historical value and represents an important part of Palma's history.
It is bounded by Plaça Quadrado, Carrer Gerreria, Carrer Bosch, Carrer Posada de Lluc and other private houses. The property does not correspond to a single building, but is the result of the joining of several properties, some with a medieval base and others from more modern times. This characteristic makes Can Serra a unique example of the urban and architectural evolution of Palma over the centuries.
However, its state of degradation has been the subject of concern and complaints from several citizens' groups and heritage professionals, who have repeatedly called for its rehabilitation and the use of the building by the public. This is why in 2002, the Government of the Balearic Islands acquired the building with the aim of restoring it and converting it into a space that could be visited, but so far it has not been fully restored.
Rehabilitation
The current Can Serra restoration project aims to restore the oldest part of the house, which was inhabited by several families between 1320 and 1447. This restoration is seen as an urgent necessity to conserve the most unique medieval elements, some of which have been hidden or lost over time. This will include the use of the most modern digital tools, which will ensure an accurate restoration that respects the history of the building and the conservation of traditional materials.
The restoration also includes the recovery of the medieval oven den Candeler, documented in the 13th century, which is located on the corner of Carrer Gerreria and Plaça Quadrado. This oven is a key part of the history of Can Serra and its restoration will provide visitors with a better understanding of daily life in Palma during the medieval period.
Awareness-raising
The Can Serra rehabilitation project also seeks to raise public awareness regarding the importance of heritage as an element of cultural identity and to increase awareness and respect for Palma's history and architecture. It will enable it to be a focal point for education, research and tourism, offering visitors an enriching experience that combines history with local culture. This, in turn, will increase the level of satisfaction of tourists, who will be able to better understand the history of Palma and enjoy a more comprehensive cultural offer.
