Ses Figueroles Restores Its Mountain Heritage

A plan that seeks both to protect the Mallorcan midwife toad and to restore a historic lodge

What does it consist of?

At Ses Figueroles public estate, between Selva and Escorca, a project is underway that combines the protection of a unique ecosystem with the restoration of valuable ethnological heritage. The natural pools and springs will once again be a refuge for the Mallorcan midwife toad, while the old houses prepare to welcome hikers and visitors.

The project

Tucked away in the heart of the Tramuntana Mountains, Ses Figueroles still boasts its traditional character. Its isolation has allowed its landscapes, natural springs and traditional buildings to remain practically the same as they were decades ago, offering the perfect opportunity to combine environmental conservation with cultural outreach.

One of the main goals of the project is to restore the Picarols Stream and the Sa Rota and Sa Mata Springs. The water from these springs flows into the estate’s historic ponds, which have become critical for the recovery of the Mallorcan midwife toad, an endemic and endangered amphibian whose population depends directly on the quality and availability of this resource.

The second goal is to refurbish the houses on the estate, respecting their original structure and elements, in order to bring them into the network of mountain lodges. These works will make it possible to show what life used to be like on a farm in the mountains, offering a journey through Mallorca's farming and livestock history and promoting public use compatible with conservation.

When the project is completed, Ses Figueroles will become one of the many areas of environmental and cultural interest in the Tramuntana Mountains, integrating the protection of an iconic species with the revitalisation of heritage that, until now, had been largely forgotten.
