The project

Since its declaration as a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, Menorca has worked hard to bring tourism in line with environmental conservation. In this context, the ‘BgreenMenorca’ plan is framed as a roadmap towards less invasive tourism, with clear criteria of sustainability and quality in the management of services and products.

Promoted by the Island Council of Menorca, the plan has sought to establish a network of tourism service providers aligned with principles of ecotourism. The measures implemented include the promotion of cleaner mobility, training in good environmental practices and the creation of products focused on nature observation, the Camí de Cavalls and the night sky.

One of the strategic pillars of the plan has been the fight against seasonality. Expanding the tourist season, diversifying activities and improving job stability in the industry have been priority objectives. To this end, work has been carried out to adapt infrastructure, boost the local economy and promote market niches in line with the island’s identity.

The plan has involved a total investment of €1.9 million, €750,000 of which came from sustainable tourism tax. BgreenMenorca thus represents a firm step towards more profitable tourism without compromising environmental balance.
