Works on the organ, stained-glass windows, presbytery and roofs at the church in Dalt Vila have been completed

With an investment of over €1 million, the stability and heritage value of the church have been reinforced.

The project

The Cathedral of Santa María, located in upper Dalt Vila, has undergone one of the most extensive restoration projects in recent years. Declared a Cultural Interest Asset and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the works have restored stability to the structure and enhanced artistic features that were in an advanced state of deterioration.

The organ is now working again after extensive repairs, while the five stained-glass windows in the apse have been reinforced to prevent them from coming loose. The presbytery has been reconfigured, restoring its pre-1830 layout, and the central nave has been widened to improve the architectural clarity of the space.

The roofs of the side chapels and the buttresses of the main façade have also been restored, replacing tiles and repairing walls that showed signs of breakage. This work ensures the safety of the church and makes it more weather-resistant.

The entire project had a total budget of €1,025,452, which was divided between the restoration of the presbytery and the stained-glass windows (€670,000), the restoration of the image of the patron saint, Mare de Déu de les Neus (€5,883) and the commissioning of the organ (€349,569). The result reinforces the Cathedral as a cultural and heritage landmark on the island, protects its historical value and reinforces its role as a hallmark of Ibiza’s identity.
