A project for the signage of the Natura 2000 Network protected natural spaces

The project

Public access to protected natural spaces is the collection of programmes, services, activities and facilities provided by the body managing the spaces in question in order to allow visitors to get to know the natural and cultural values of the space, in an orderly and safe manner that guarantees the conservation, understanding and appreciation of these values through information, education and interpretation of the heritage.

The signage of protected natural spaces is one of the facilities made available to the public. The signage consists of all the signposts located in selected protected natural spaces and their surrounding areas that have been installed to provide information, identify locations and facilities, orientate and distribute visitors, and give a uniform and consistent image of public access and the environmental authorities it is managed by.

It is worth noting that the majority of the population is unaware of the existence of the Natura 2000 Network. Among the aims of the General Directorate of Natural Spaces and Biodiversity is to create awareness of this natural heritage of the Balearic Islands, therefore making it essential for these spaces that we are surrounded by and that occupy 23% of the land on the islands to be recognised by the public.

The execution of the Natura 2000 Network spaces signage project is considered to be a good way of creating awareness of the existence of these spaces among tourists and residents alike, which can contribute to the preservation of the natural environment. The standards included in the management plans for these spaces will be included in this signage.
