The Balearic Islands have a dozen protected natural areas spread over Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Managing these sites requires ongoing planning and a range of tasks including direct conservation, awareness raising and public engagement.
Planned actions include conservation, infrastructure maintenance, scientific monitoring, improved public use, annual planning and administrative tasks. Also, environmental surveillance tasks are supported by environmental agents, and citizens and landowners are encourage to get involved in management.
In view of growing tourist interest in natural areas, the plan promotes the organisation of informative activities, guided tours, signposting and the creation and maintenance of visitor centres. This approach seeks to balance the public’s enjoyment with the protection of biodiversity and the landscape.
This initiative, funded through sustainable tourism tax, also aims to improve the tools used for evaluating results, ensuring effective management in line with ecological and social challenges across the archipelago.
