The project

This project, carried out around Llimpa/Santa Madrona in the heart of the S'Albufera des Grau Natural Park, set out to restore a landscape damaged by the traces of urban development prior to the park being declared a protected area. The three chalets that remained standing in the public area were demolished and two plots of the Sa Boval Vella estate were purchased to become part of protected public property.

The works were part of plans to reverse the effects of the Shangri-La development, which was once built on rural land before being suspended due to this government action. Once the buildings had been removed, the soil was restored and native species were planted, such as wild olive and oak trees, using seeds collected locally.

As well as this demolition, work was carried out to restore traditional agricultural and livestock structures, such as dry walls, gates, wells and enclosures. These elements, damaged by urban development or neglect, are part of the park’s cultural landscape, and contribute to its ecological and ethnographic significance.

This environmental restoration process reinforces the institutional commitment to actively protecting the natural environment in Menorca. Actions such as this not only help to protect natural heritage, but also to redefine the use of the land in line with principles of sustainability and ecological coherence.
