More than 2,500 farmers will receive financial support to maintain environmentally friendly practices. The Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund helps cover some of the extra work required in farming without damaging the environment, in a context where the viability of many farms is at stake.

With the aim of curbing rural depopulation and ensuring viable, sustainable farming on the Balearic Islands, the Balearic Government has launched a new agri-environmental grant scheme funded by the ITS fund. This support will enable the launch of funding calls for farms working with local breeds and varieties, practising organic farming or using alternative techniques to chemical treatments.
The project foresees an investment of €13 million to be given out until 2027, with aid to compensate for cost overruns due to island status or working in areas with natural limitations. Practices such as the use of recycled water and integrated pest management are also supported. The first funding calls are already underway and others will be launched soon, with a three-year implementation period.
These measures are in line with the priority objectives of the annual ITS plan, especially the focus on protecting and modernising the farming environment. Funding will benefit more than 160,000 hectares of farmland, where production goes hand in hand with landscape and biodiversity conservation, which are also key to tourism on the island.
