The Balearic Islands are particularly vulnerable to episodes of heavy rainfall occurring over just a few hours, which cause flash flooding in streams. These watercourses, which are dry for most of the year, can cause the destructive dragging of soil and sediment. In this context, the proper management of watercourses has become a priority to mitigate the risks associated with flooding.
The Directorate-General for Water Resources has carried out a series of actions to conserve and adapt stretches of streams in environmentally sensitive areas, such as Natural Areas of Special Interest (ANEIs, specific to the Balearic Islands), SCIs, SPAs and areas in the Tramuntana Mountains. These protected areas require special actions adjusted to their ecology and protection regime, which go beyond simply clearing or cleaning watercourses.
The plan has included field work, data collection, a study of preventive measures and in-depth monitoring of environmental requirements. It has also focused on a strategic environmental assessment of the Flood Risk Management Plan (PGRI), which sets priorities in prevention and early warning based on the hydrological characteristics of each basin.
With an investment of €250,000, funded entirely through sustainable tourism tax, the plan seeks to prepare these areas against extreme weather, without compromising the protection of their natural heritage. This action makes it possible to reconcile water security with ecological conservation in the most sensitive areas of the Balearic Islands.
