The project

The Science and Technology system of the Balearic Islands has certain weaknesses that limit its potential. Currently, the economic model is largely based on tourism, leaving the economy vulnerable to fluctuations in the tourism market. This calls for a shift towards a model based on the knowledge economy, providing greater stability and more sustainable development in the long term.

This call for projects seeks to strengthen scientific and technological research, which is considered essential for economic diversification. It also increases the competitiveness of enterprises, improves productivity and generates quality jobs. Not surprisingly, research contributes to the resolution of social, economic and environmental problems affecting Balearic society.

The call is split into two, one in 2025 and one in 2026, each with a maximum budget of €1,500,000 per call and year. Selected projects will have a duration of three years and will must be framed within priority areas defined by the Science and Technology Act, such as the revaluation of historical and cultural heritage, energy transition, protection of the natural environment and modernisation of the rural environment, among others.

The call aims to have an impact beyond pure scientific research. It seeks to promote quality research projects that, in addition to being published in forums of high scientific impact, also contribute to solving real problems of Balearic society. Special emphasis is also given to projects led by young female researchers with promising careers.

Knowledge production is seen as a key element for the economic growth and sustainability of the Balearic Islands. The call aims to consolidate a mature science and technology system, capable of contributing directly to social welfare, business productivity and the quality of life of citizens.

Promoting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research is essential to mobilise complementary knowledge in different scientific fields. Another goal is to promote the international scientific leadership of Balearic research groups, especially in areas related to sustainable tourism and environmental protection. This will make it possible to address major societal challenges with a holistic vision and contribute to a more diversified and resilient economy, capable of responding to the challenges of the future.
