The project

What do Balearic locals think about water management, energy transition and the impact of tourism? These are some of the questions that will be addressed by the new public opinion polls to be conducted between 2025 and 2028. The objective: to obtain a social snapshot that will allow government bodies to better respond to challenges on the islands.

The project, driven by the Directorate-General of the Economy and Statistics, will involve web and telephone interviews with a representative sample of the population on the four islands. With a minimum of 1,200 yearly surveys, this method will make it possible to assess differences by area, age and gender, to provide an accurate understanding of the islands.

Beyond collecting citizens’ views, the programme plans to turn this information into concrete recommendations. The investment will also go towards statistical analysis, purchasing new software and recruiting expert staff to turn the survey results into proposals on matters such as the environment, local economy and social cohesion.

The total budget of the plan amounts to €1.05 million. The initiative is aligned with principles of improving democratic quality and responds to EU recommendations to strengthen policies adapted to complex and changing island contexts.
