Andratx Upgrades its Wastewater System With New Infrastructure

The project will expand the network of pumping stations, collectors and outfalls to improve wastewater treatment in Andratx, Port d’Andratx and s’Arracó

What does it consist of?

Andratx’s sewage system is entering a new phase of modernisation with the construction of a pumping station at Port d’Andratx, upgrades to sewers and the extension of the land-based outfall. The project aims to adapt the network to the current needs of the local population and the tourism industry, thereby boosting wastewater treatment capacity in south-west Mallorca.

The project

Urban growth and seasonal pressure in coastal areas of Mallorca mean sewage infrastructure must be reviewed on a regular basis. In the municipality of Andratx, the wastewater treatment system serves several communities, including Andratx, Port d’Andratx and s’Arracó, which have seen increasing demand in recent years. In response to this situation, a project has been launched to expand and improve the entire sewage system.

The project is part of the second phase of the modernisation of Andratx’s wastewater treatment plant. This includes the construction of a new wastewater pumping station (WWPS) at Port d’Andratx, as well as the refurbishment of the discharge chamber in s’Arracó and improvements to access to this facility. In addition, new pipelines are being built to carry both wastewater and treated water within the system.

One of the key aspects of the project is the new pumping station, designed to significantly increase the system’s capacity. The facility will increase pumping capacity to 405 m³ per hour and improve the wastewater from s’Arracó and Port d’Andratx. There are also plans to increase the hydraulic capacity of the land-based outfall and to optimise the existing collection network.

These measures will help to adapt the sewage infrastructure to serve a potential population of around 35,000, thereby improving wastewater treatment and reducing the environmental risks associated with outdated networks. This marks the completion of a process that began years ago with the expansion of the treatment plant, with the aim of improving the resilience of the water system in one of Mallorca’s busiest coastal areas.
