New Wastewater Pumping Station in Es Migjorn Gran

The relocation of the WWPS improves sanitation and frees up space on the industrial estate

What does it consist of?

The Menorcan municipality of Es Migjorn Gran now has a new wastewater pumping station to replace the old facility located on the industrial estate. The relocation restructures the sewage system that connects the towns of Es Migjorn Gran and Sant Tomàs with the treatment plant, and frees up space on urban land.

The project

The local sewerage system in Es Migjorn Gran includes a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), a network of collectors and a return pipe to the Son Boter ravine. The former wastewater pumping station (WWPS) operated inside a warehouse on the industrial estate, which made maintenance difficult and limited future improvements. For this reason, the local council made the decision to relocate it.

The works, led by the Balearic Government and executed by the Balearic Water Agency (ABAQUA), have included a new pumping chamber and service hut, a low-voltage line and a 180-metre gravity pipe to divert the flow. Demolition and waste management of the former facility brought the works to a finish.

With the new infrastructure in place, pumping to the WWTP is now more reliable and there is less risk of incidents. Official figures show a planned investment of €472,415, of which €429,186 was executed.

The action improves the treatment capacity for Es Migjorn Gran and Sant Tomàs, supports the protection of the receiving environment and ensures more accessible operational control. The relocation has removed an obsolete facility on industrial land and tidied up the local area.
