The work was carried out on a vulnerable stretch of Sant Miquel Stream, near s'Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park. This area suffered from water stagnation, obstructions and sinkholes that hindered the hydraulic functioning of the waterway and threatened the stability of the river environment. With an investment of €180,000, the project has made it possible to restore the bed of the stream and rebuild the damaged banks.
The initiative is part of broader plans to protect and improve the natural workings of the island's hydrographic network. These measures aim to restore the river cross section at critical points, restore the flow regime and improve ecological diversity within the waterway. Work has also been carried out to ensure safety of access, while defence walls have been repaired on the left bank upstream of the junction with the DT-3420 road.
Landscape integration and respect for the environment have been central to the work. The riverbank protection works were carried out using materials and techniques already found in the area, and the riverbed was levelled using natural elements. The aim has been to avoid invasive interventions and to ensure compatibility between the hydraulic infrastructure and river ecosystem.
This action will help to reduce the risk of collapse and obstructions that once threatened public waters and the quality of the water flowing into s'Albufera. The project thus contributes to protecting one of the most valuable wetlands in the Balearic Islands, in a context of growing climatic and environmental stress.
