Electrification of the fleet of local council vehicles of the Mallorca public water network, Palma

Energy transition for a more sustainable management

What does it consist of?

The aim of this project is to contaminating emissions such as the gases from the combustion of fossil fuels due to the carbon footprint and the greenhouse effect they cause, and noise pollution generated by vehicle engines. In addition, it also aims to reduce fuel costs, which in some cases means the total elimination of this expense if energy comes from solar panels.

The project

The local councils that form part of the Mallorca public water network (Aguas Públicas de Mallorca - APM) (Campanet, Inca, Manacor, Palma, Pollença, Sa Pobla and Valldemossa) manage the water cycle of their municipalities, both directly and through municipal companies. As managers of these services, their vehicles have an important presence in the urban environment, with a major impact in terms of climate change, air quality and noise, due to the use of fossil fuels in conventional vehicle engines.

Palma city council has a sustainable energy actions plan (SEAPs) to meet targets aimed at combating climate change. It also has an air quality improvement plan and an action plan to reduce noise pollution, which both take into account the initiative to electrify the fleet of local council vehicles to ensure the objectives are met.

EMAYA is the municipal company of Palma city council that manages the water cycle (supply and treatment), waste collection and road cleaning. As the company managing these services, its vehicles have an important presence in the urban environment, with a major impact in terms of climate change and air quality and noise, due to the use of fossil fuels in conventional vehicle engines.

Taking all of the above into account, EMAYA should be a model of energy transition towards renewable sources and environmentally efficient alternative technologies, in line with European strategies and with the generational change of mobility technologies.

Accordingly, this project ensures that Palma city council through EMAYA, will be allocated a part of the investment for the transition, which will involve installing electric charge points for vehicles, and replacing 24 vehicles in the fleet of local council vehicles, of which 11 are cars, 12 are vans, and one is a large van. This new electric fleet of vehicles will be more environmentally efficient and less costly.
