The project

After more than two decades in operation, the Badia de Palma desalination plant has seen its production capacity reduced due to the wear and tear of equipment and technological advances in the industry. In a context of increasing strain on water, upgrading this infrastructure is a priority in order to increase the supply of drinking water in Mallorca.

The Balearic Government sought engineering services to assess the state of the facilities and to draw up the remodelling project. This work made it possible to identify the system’s major critical points (from the osmosis membranes to supporting equipment) and to define the actions needed to improve the plant’s performance.

Technical analysis included the proposal of new, more efficient components, as well as compliance with current energy, environmental and water management regulations. The planning was also in line with sustainability standards, with a view to reducing energy consumption and improving the overall functioning of the system.

With an investment of €464,501, funded through sustainable tourism tax, this engineering work lays the foundations for more comprehensive renovations in the future. The action is part of the region’s strategy for adapting to climate change and improving local water stability.
