The large-scale use of private cars and hire cars to reach the natural areas and certain beaches of Mallorca can end up causing various types of serious environmental problems. On the one hand, there is excessive human pressure on these natural areas, which affects their proper conservation in the medium and long term.
On the other hand, there are problems related to the large-scale use of cars including traffic problems on access roads or illegal parking in natural spaces. This causes the emission of contaminating gases, soil deterioration and, therefore, additional damage to that caused by human pressure.
Therefore, with this project, actions are being proposed to encourage the use of public transport to visit natural areas and popular beaches in Mallorca, especially considering, among others, the great attraction of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range for hiking, which makes it a strategic destination within the framework of the off-season tourism policies of the Balearic Islands Government.
The areas where action is proposed are: Serra de Tramuntana, Formentor peninsula, the Platja de Muro beaches (Es Comú, Son Real, Cala Varques), Mondragó national park, s'Almunia and Es Trenc beach. In general, the following types of actions are planned:
- Construction of new bus stops for the regular TIB service or renovating existing ones in order to improve accessibility.
- Creation of car parks outside the protected areas.
- Implementation of regular shuttle bus services of the TIB to access important natural areas or virgin beaches, or increase the frequency of existing TIB regular lines.
- Installation of boards with clear information on access restrictions to natural areas and availability of parking.
- Placing of road signs on the road network.
- Campaigns on sustainable mobility solutions to raise awareness on alternatives to private vehicles.
