The project

The pressure from private vehicle traffic on Mallorca’s most popular natural areas has been one of the greatest conservation challenges for the island. The increase in privately owned and rental cars accessing beaches and places such as Formentor and Es Trenc has led to congestion, emissions and damage to environments of high ecological importance.

This plan has encouraged the use of collective public transport as an alternative to private cars. Public bus stops operated by the local transport operator, TIB, have been built and improved. Park-and-ride car parks have also been built outside protected areas, and regular lines and shuttle services have been improved to connect with key points such as the Tramuntana Mountains and Son Real.

The actions have also included the installation of boards with up-to-date information on access restrictions and available parking, as well as improvements to road signage. This has been supported by information campaigns to raise awareness of sustainable transport alternatives available to residents and visitors.

The initiative has relieved pressure on fragile ecosystems, improved the visitor experience and promoted more orderly mobility. It has also made these destinations more attractive in line with strategies of increasing off-peak tourism, targeting both conservation and accessibility in a single action.
