The project

The natural park is one of the most important coastal areas in the Mediterranean, thanks to its unique combination of fine sandy beaches, dunes, wetlands, posidonia seagrass meadows and coastal forests. Increasing pressure from tourism and a greater variety of activities had threatened the stability of these ecosystems, which are particularly vulnerable to human disruption and environmental change.

The actions have focused on restoring the sand dune system by stabilising sandy areas and protecting their plant life, as well as restoring the habitat of the European bee-eater in the Ses Arenas quarry. The plan also sought to improve the management of posidonia seagrass debris on the beach, which is essential to protect the coastline. It also addressed scientific monitoring of flora and fauna on the salt marsh and the coastline.

In order to ensure public use is compatible with conservation, the plan has marked out pathways using poles and ropes, clear signposting and measures to control visitor traffic. Moreover, an info campaign has been put in place to make users aware of the vulnerability of the park and to encourage behaviour that respects its biodiversity and landscape.

Completed in 2023 with an executed budget of more than €550,000, the initiative has made it possible to restore damaged habitats and establish a sustainable management model for Es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos. This plan confirms the importance of aligning conservation with responsible public use in the most important natural areas of the Balearic Islands.
