Ibiza Modernises Its Waste Transfer Station

The plant will boost its capacity and efficiency to tackle rising waste in summer

What does it consist of?

Ibiza’s waste transfer station will be renovated to handle the growing demand of separate waste collection and to respond to the spike in waste generated in summer. The plan seeks to upgrade equipment, expand storage capacity and optimise operations in order to strengthen the island’s circular economy.

The project

Having run since 2003, Ibiza’s waste transfer station is a key infrastructure for handling the separate collection of paper, cardboard and glass. Over time, with more and more waste managed—especially in summer—the facilities have become outdated. This has led to plans for its total remodelling.

The Island Council of Ibiza is driving this action in order to improve the processing of waste such as paper/cardboard and glass, provide better working conditions and prepare for upcoming changes set out in the island’s Waste Master Plan. Measures include new machinery, renovations to the main building, the expansion of reception and storage areas, and adaptations to entrances and the control unit.

One of the key aspects will be more storage capacity, allowing the station to handle up to 700 tonnes of paper/cardboard and more than 150 tonnes of glass. This improvement is especially important during the high season, when tourism causes a spike in the amount of waste generated. The station will thus be able to operate more safely and efficiently, avoiding overflow.

The total investment amounts to over €2.6 million and is supported by funding from the Next Generation EU scheme. The work is part of the Balearic Islands’ circular economy and sustainable tourism strategy, and puts Ibiza on the path towards more advanced management, in line with the archipelago’s environmental challenges and ecological transition commitments.
