Inca Makes Progress in Clean Mobility by Electrifying Its Vehicles

Inca Town Council has upgraded local council vehicles to reduce emissions and noise

What does it consist of?

The municipality of Inca has replaced some of its combustion vehicles with electric ones. This measure is part of a joint action between seven Mallorcan town councils, funded through sustainable tourism tax, and aims to reduce the environmental impact of urban public services.

The project

Local council vehicles are part of the urban landscape, but also of its climate footprint. With the aim of reducing pollutant emissions and noise on public roads, Inca has added six electric vehicles to its water management service. Five of them are vans, and the sixth a passenger car, all of which are now operating with zero local emissions.

This action is part of a joint initiative between the municipalities in Mallorca’s public water network (Aguas Públicas de Mallorca), which also includes Palma, Manacor, Campanet, Pollença, Sa Pobla and Valldemossa. In total, the plan has made it possible to upgrade 47 vehicles across the island, prioritising older models and those with the highest emissions. Each vehicle comes with its own electric charging point to ensure an effective, self-sufficient transition.

Inca Town Council has used part of the investment to install charging stations, essential for the new vehicle fleet to run smoothly. With execution budgeted at almost €147,000, installations took place between 2018 and 2019, and the plan has been fully implemented. The funding came entirely from sustainable tourism tax.

Beyond the technological upgrade, the initiative is part of a broader local energy transition strategy. Several of the municipalities involved have climate action plans or schemes for noise reduction and air quality improvement. Electrifying local council vehicles not only contributes to these goals, but also positions local authorities as active agents of change towards a cleaner, more efficient model of mobility.
