The project

For years, the Island Council of Mallorca has been developing a territorial strategy committed to landscape restoration as a cultural, environmental and social priority. A project for landscape integration in the El Molinar neighbourhood, funded through sustainable tourism tax with a total investment of €583,483, is part of this strategy.

The goal is twofold: firstly, to expand the non-motorised network of greenways at a transition point between Palma and Marratxí, from the Son Parera park and the Gros Stream; and secondly, to honour great ethnological heritage that is central to the town’s history, affected by infrastructures such as the Ma-19 motorway.

The planned actions include the complete restoration of the old railway bridge over the stream, recovery of surrounding vegetation, connected bicycle lanes in El Molinar and the Llevant Estate, and integration of existing paths. Landscaping work will also be carried out on constructed slopes to act as a noise barrier.

The plan, still pending execution, is intended to benefit both residents and tourists by improving the look of the entrance to Palma from the southeast and reinforcing the everyday use of the public space. Landscape integration is seen here as a tool both for territorial cohesion and for improving the quality of life in the town.
