Improvements to Drinking Water Treatment and Chlorination in Sóller

The plan strengthens water quality through works on the DWTP and the water tank

What does it consist of?

The remodelling of the Sóller drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) includes new disinfection systems and improves the chlorination of the municipal water tank. The aim of the plan is to ensure the quality of the water collected from the Torrent Major Stream before being distributed for human consumption.

The project

The supply of drinking water in the municipality of Sóller depends largely on the flow that comes from the Torrent Major Stream. However, the state of this waterway and the need to ensure health standards have led to the reinforcement of existing facilities. The works have focused on improving the drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) and adapting the chlorination system of the supply tank.

A major goal of the project has been to facilitate treatment prior to filtration by adapting the inlet channel, installing an agitation system and adding sodium hypochlorite. This ensures the minimum contact time required for effective disinfection, making the water fit for human consumption.

The works carried out include the construction of a double GRP channel to separate each phase of the process, the installation of agitators, the renovation of the tank roof and the extension of the chlorination facilities. Improvements have also been made to the storage tank system, which is key to ensuring the stability of water quality over time.

The works, managed by the Balearic Water Agency (ABAQUA) and publicly funded through sustainable tourism tax (ITS), have made it possible to modernise key infrastructure for the municipality. The plan strengthens local water security and helps to ensure the responsible management of drinking water, a highly vulnerable resource.
