The project

Son Fornés archaeological site in Mallorca is a key place for the study of the Talayotic past. This new research and documentation centre seeks to strengthen the existing museum’s areas of focus, namely research, conservation and outreach, and to broaden its impact through a space specifically designed for these purposes.

The proposal includes the total refurbishment of the houses on the premises, located in the upper part of the site, to accommodate offices, a lab, accommodation for researchers and exhibition spaces. This architectural work will be carried out in a way that respects the original structure of the buildings and their natural surroundings, while protecting plant life and the traditional rural landscape.

Beyond the site itself, the project aims to open the centre to the educational community, offering school workshops, university-level training and meetings with international experts. A documentation archive will also be set up for heritage professionals, something which does not currently exist in the Balearic Islands.

Although still in the works, the initiative not only highlights the site’s archaeological and ethnological heritage, but also sets out a model for cultural development rooted in the local area. This new centre will enhance the range of high-quality cultural tourism activities available and help to diversify the local economy in a sustainable way.
