The project

A plan to promote crafts and local products is part of a regional strategy focused on the economy, sustainability and culture. Led by the Island Council of Mallorca with funding from sustainable tourism tax, it aims to promote local craftsmanship as the key to a fairer economic model less dependent on the seasonal nature of tourism.

The proposal includes a range of actions: from participatory processes with local councils and guilds, to publicity campaigns, specialised training and institutional support for local products. A conference held in August 2019 brought together 22 municipalities and over 20 industry associations, from agri-food cooperatives to representatives of the origin quality labels ‘IGP Sobrassada’ and ‘DO Binissalem’.

The goal is twofold: to diversify the tourism economy and to boost the self-sufficiency of producers and artisans. The project also focuses on protecting designations of origin, tackling counterfeit products and improving access to the market. With eyes set on the long-term, structural measures have been prioritised over one-off government grants.

The plan is currently still underway. Most of the actors involved stress the importance of building support networks this time round, viewing this as an opportunity to create a sustainable, profitable production ecosystem with local values at its roots.
