After more than a decade since works began, the marine outfall of Ciutadella Nord wastewater treatment plant has finally been completed. The work resolves technical deficiencies outstanding since 2010 and reinforces the environmental safety of the sanitation system.

Marine outfalls are key elements in coastal treatment systems, as they allow previously treated wastewater to be discharged into the sea, in line with technical standards that minimise impact on the coastal environment. In Ciutadella Nord, the work launched in 2010 was not completed, creating an operational problem that has lasted for years.
In 2011, the Balearic Water Agency (ABAQUA) had issued a negative report regarding the work, finding that it did not meet the necessary conditions for it to be put into service. Based on this assessment, a new plan was launched with the aim of correcting the existing deficiencies in both the marine section and the diffuser system.
The work carried out has included the removal of the remains of the original outfall, adaptations to the section that rests on the seabed, and improvements to the diffuser section, which is responsible for dispersing treated water through various openings in areas far from swimming spots. This work ensures safe, controlled discharge, in accordance with current environmental regulations.
With a total investment of €736,837, funded by sustainable tourism tax, this plan is part of the strategy to modernise the municipality’s general sewerage system. Together with other actions in the Ciutadella Sud network, it represents towards more efficient, more respectful water management in Menorca.
