Renovations to Parts of the Sewage Network in Ciutadella Sud

The fibre cement section between the WWTP and WWPS has been replaced to improve the service

What does it consist of?

Ciutadella Sud has completed the partial replacement of its sewage network, working on the fibre cement section that connects the pumping station to the treatment plant. The work upgrades outdated infrastructure and improves the reliability of the system that serves the city centre and urban developments in the south, reducing breakdowns and supporting coastal protection.

The project

The general sewage and purification system of Ciutadella Sud serves the city centre of Ciutadella and the urban developments of Cap d'Artrutx, Son Blanc, Cala Blanca, Sa Caleta and Santandria. It includes a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), pumping station (WWPS), pipelines and a marine outfall for effluent.

Since the Balearic Water Agency (ABAQUA) took over management in 1991, few comprehensive upgrades had taken place, leaving outdated equipment and pipes prone to failure. The work focuses on the fibre cement wastewater pipeline between the WWPS and the WWTP, which is being renovated to ensure the system remains in good working order.

The project, led by the Balearic Government and executed by ABAQUA, includes the demolition of the old pipeline and the installation of new piping with modern materials, as well as additional connection and commissioning work. The final expenditure amounted to €301,623.

This replacement reduces the risk of ruptures and leaks, improves pumping energy efficiency and increases treatment capacity prior to discharge via the outfall. The overall system now operates with greater stability, contributing to the public health of the population served and the protection of coastal waters.
