The project

The project is part of Ciutadella City Council’s heritage strategy to reinforce the protection and enhancement of historical structures that define the municipality’s identity. In this case, work has been carried out on the walls and bastions surrounding the old centre, which are renowned for their symbolic and cultural significance.

The action has included refurbishments to the Bastió des Governador and the Reial Alcàsser, as well as other points such as the Muradeta and the Bastió de sa Font. Beyond structurally improving these elements, historical, archaeological and architectural studies have been carried out to ensure the work respects the original monuments.

The goals include improving the urban landscape, enhancing its social and cultural purpose, and promoting less seasonal tourism. The works have had a direct impact on the image that Ciutadella gives to both residents and tourists, by creating more space for meeting, walking and understanding the surroundings.

With public funding from sustainable tourism tax, this restoration has executed 90.7% of the planned budget. It shows how heritage conservation can also be a driving force for revitalising the local area by connecting history, the public and cultural tourism.
