Palma will relaunch the refurbishment of Ses Cases del Retiro, a municipal building that has been in disuse for more than a decade. The space will become a centre open to the public, with activities linked to environmental education and scientific information.

The project
Ses Cases del Retiro is an 18th-century building that underwent modification throughout the 19th century, and is an important heritage asset in the municipality. Located in the Bonanova area, a first attempt at refurbishment was made between 2008 and 2011, which came to a halt. Since then, the building has suffered considerable deterioration, due to both the passage of time and acts of vandalism.
The current project seeks to expand on the previous work with a new approach. The work planned includes energy efficiency solutions, universal accessibility and a public service-oriented use. The aim is to convert this building into an educational and cultural space open all year round.
The project seeks to restore the structure, make entry points more accessible and renovate the facilities. Some rooms will also be used as a museum space. This transformation will make it possible to offer activities aimed at different audiences, with content on sustainability, science and public engagement.
Beyond the physical recovery of the building, the initiative reinforces the network of municipal facilities linked to the environment and knowledge. Ses Cases del Retiro aspires to become a stable resource for schools, associations and locals, with a programme that promotes the relationship between the land, heritage and the public.
