Promoting direct sales and responsible consumption on the four islands

What does it consist of?

The project

On all the islands, local markets and fairs linked to the farming industry have historically been hubs where local production meets everyday life. However, the expansion of large supermarkets has pushed them to the sidelines, leaving behind trade practices that sustained not only the rural economy, but also cultural relationships with the land.

Through this plan, the Balearic Government has promoted a joint strategy to revive these spaces. The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has led assessments, participatory processes with producers and consumers, and proposals for inter-institutional coordination. The focus is on food self-sufficiency and a more cohesive network of markets throughout the archipelago.

The actions include the development of individualised plans for each municipality, the promotion of responsible consumption, the creation of market collaboration networks and the promotion of measures to boost the range of local craft products available in these spaces. Moreover, it has been proposed that markets should be listed as Intangible Heritage, recognising their social and cultural importance.

The intervention has been carried out with an investment of €250,000, provided through sustainable tourism tax. This first phase lays the foundations for a long-term strategy linking food sovereignty, local economy and heritage, in a fairer, more personal model of trade for the Balearic Islands.
