With a budget of over 4 million euros, the Balearic Government is promoting a comprehensive strategy to modernise livestock farming, improve food self-sufficiency and reduce the environmental impact of the sector. The plan includes actions regarding digitalisation, training and efficient resource management in over 40 farms.

Livestock production in the Balearic Islands is experiencing challenging times: high feed costs, dependence on the external sources and vulnerability to climate change. To address these challenges, the Regional Ministry of Agriculture has launched a multi-annual plan focused on improving the sustainability and resilience of the sector.
One of the main aims of the project is to reduce dependence on external sources of fodder, which increases production costs. Therefore, grouped feed purchases will be promoted and new feeding formulas, adapted to the island's reality, will be evaluated. At the same time, a specific model for calculating the environmental footprint of livestock farms in the archipelago will be developed.
Digitalisation is another key focus. Plans are in place to fund tools to enable farms to analyse their own data, identify inefficiencies and adapt their production strategies. Continuous training will also be promoted in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands, which is participating in a pilot project along with 43 farms.
This programme, in line with the 2024-2028 Strategic Livestock Farming Plan, also seeks to highlight the sector's role as a landscape manager and creator of ecosystem services. In an area where livestock farming contributes to the maintenance of biodiversity and the local economy, the objective is clear: to modernise without losing its roots.
