The project

The progressive loss of farming activity in the Balearic countryside is a major challenge faced by rural areas. With just 3.2% of farmers under 35 years of age—lower than the national average, the lack of generational turnover threatens the survival of agriculture, along with the environmental balance in large areas of the archipelago.

In response to this situation, the Balearic Government has launched a scheme to provide financial support for the recruitment of young farmers. The aid covers both initial costs and the structural adaptations to farms, and is geared towards new owners and co-owners, either individually or through partnerships. In Menorca, for example, aid will be granted through Sociedades Rurales Menorquinas (SRM), a rural business association.

This scheme, implemented under Measure 6.1 of the wider 2014–2020 Rural Development Scheme, aims to endorse a business plan that ensures the viability of farming activity in the medium and long term. The aim is not only to boost recruitment, but also to ensure farming activity thrives.

The scheme is set to run until 2025. Beyond economic and demographic benefits, the scheme is expected to help protect the countryside, ensure the conservation of active agricultural soil and create new social dynamics in the area.
