The Balearic Islands have two areas to deal with regarding the cleaning up of waste. On the one hand, there is the trash left inland in public spaces, on river banks, in maritime-land public spaces, etc. The waste disposal service receives a large number of complaints from SEPRONA and environmental agents related to dumped waste. At present, local public offices have difficulty in providing the resources to carry out the periodic actions required to clean public spaces.
On the other hand, in low season, we find the waste accumulated in coastal areas. Although it is the responsibility of local municipalities to maintain the proper conditions in terms of the cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation of beaches and public bathing places, local entities are having a lot of difficulty in meeting cleaning objectives.
Therefore, and taking into account the importance of having waste-free public spaces, for citizens and tourisms, a comprehensive programme is considered of great interest to clear away trash from public spaces on an annual basis, which is to be run in collaboration with entities that work with people at risk of social exclusion.
This annual cleaning plan is divided into two programmes:
- Programme 1: "Cleaning of waste in public spaces", which is comprised, on the one hand, of a digital cartographic inventory with the location of waste disposal points in public spaces and, on the other hand, of the cleaning and removal of waste from public spaces.
- Programme 2: "Cleaning of coves in winter using terrestrial means", by hiring groups at risk of social exclusion to carry out tasks related to the preservation and improvement of the beaches and coves.
