The Balearic Islands expands boating surveillance to prevent illegal anchoring and overcrowding

What does it consist of?

The acquisition of eight vessels and the creation of inspection teams will make it possible to control illegal rentals, protect Posidonia seagrass and strengthen safety along the coasts of the Balearic Islands. These measures respond to increased pressure from tourism and the unregulated expansion of boating activity.

The project

Boating activity has grown steadily in the Balearics, especially after the end of pandemic-related restrictions. This increase has led to more overcrowding on the coastline, due to both recreational boats and tourism services that are not always regulated. The Balearic Government has decided to act in response to a situation that compromises safety, the environment and the quality of tourism.

The new system will see the purchase of eight government-owned vessels and the hiring of special staff for patrolling, inspection and processing sanctions. Until now, the government had relied on outsourcing and limited resources, making it difficult to respond effectively. The surveillance fleet will be deployed across the different islands according to seasonal needs and the areas under most pressure.

The aim is to curb illegal activities such as unlicensed boat rentals, anchoring in Posidonia (seagrass) meadows and the improper use of the publicly owned shoreline. The system also seeks to ensure compliance with safety regulations at sea and to control the spread of tourist services covered by other categories.

The initiative also foresees the creation of a coordination centre, where complaints will be dealt with and operations will be handled. Through this plan, the Balearic Government is committed to more orderly use of the sea, in line with environmental protection and the safety of locals and tourists.
