Cooperation and Innovation to Revamp the Countryside

New projects are driving agricultural innovation in the Balearic Islands

What does it consist of?

A lack of funding had put a brake on innovative proposals with great potential in the agri-food sector. Nevertheless, this funding scheme has made it possible to launch new cooperation initiatives under the Rural Development Programme, focusing on the environment, the circular economy and technological development.

The project

The 2014–2020 Rural Development Programme established a range of measures to promote sustainability and competitiveness in the agricultural sector. However, several cooperation proposals had been unable to move forward due to a lack of funding. The new project led by FOGAIBA was specially designed to fill that gap, providing specific resources to launch new initiatives.

The goal was to pave the way for collaborative projects between stakeholders in the agri-food sector: from farmers to food processing companies, including organisations involved in innovation or regional development. This collaborative approach is key to tackling structural challenges such as sector fragmentation, the small size of farms, and the need to modernise processes and products.

The measures planned included design and technological development activities, pilot trials and small-scale investments aimed at validating new products or processes. Priority was also given to projects that included environmental improvements, sustainability standards or circular economy principles.

Beyond its impact on production, this initiative has helped to create jobs, promote economic diversification and strengthen local capabilities. The expected benefits range from boosting R&D&I to improving water management, the energy transition and the restoration of the natural environment.
