The project

The public use of protected natural areas in the Balearic Islands requires active management based on conservation, monitoring and information. In this context, the Regional Ministry for the Environment launched a campaign focused on guiding visitors through areas of high environmental and scenic importance in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

The plan involved direct intervention in the area, with teams deployed across various sites within the Natura 2000 network. The primary goal was to inform visitors about the specific characteristics and rules of each location, promoting a respectful, mindful experience in areas with significant seasonal footfall.

Beyond providing information, the campaign also included monitoring activities, with the aim of identifying risky behaviour, collecting usage data and improving future planning for these spaces. The presence of staff on the ground has been key to ensuring compliance with basic conservation standards.

The plan, with an executed budget of €726,964, has helped to strike a balance between public access and environmental protection. This initiative builds on previous environmental awareness campaigns and strengthens institutional presence in areas of outstanding natural beauty.
