The project

The agri-food industry in the Balearic Islands is under strain from small-scale production structures, low profitability and additional costs due to insularity. This situation has limited its competitiveness, keeping it on the sidelines of technological progress seen in the industry in other regions.

In response, the Balearic Government is offering financial support through the Rural Development Scheme, seeking to establish new cooperation and innovation projects in the farming industry. This support, first granted in 2019, channels sustainable tourism tax to expand the budget available and respond to an unmet demand.

The goal is clear: to foster alliances between farmers, processors and other actors to design quality products and processes. This includes technological development, preliminary tests, strategic investments and marketing campaigns for short food supply chains, in line with principles of sustainability, efficiency and circular economy.

So far, financial support has been granted to initiatives that aim to improve the traceability of local products, reduce the use of polluting inputs and create more direct sales channels between producers and consumers. The overall aim is to build a more resilient, dynamic and competitive model of farming on the islands.
