Promotion of electric vehicles

The project

The Balearic Islands have great potential for the implementation of electric vehicles. This would lead to significant environmental improvements since the replacement of petrol driven vehicles with electric vehicles implies an important saving in fossil fuels together with a reduction in CO2 emissions and other polluting gases.

The project to promote electric vehicles will contribute to energy transition and the mitigation of the environmental impact associated with road transport in two ways: 1) electrifying part of the public road transport network to increase its efficiency and the potential to attract travellers, and to reduce energy consumption and emissions; and 2) causing an important leap towards the electrification of residents' cars, economic activities, and hire cars.

An increase in electric vehicles has further associated advantages: the modernisation and diversification of the economy with an entry into emerging technological and economic sectors; the creation of innovative business models by the existing business sector on the islands; demonstrating to the rest of Europe that the objective of the Balearic Islands is to become a sustainable and intelligent tourist destination; the development of intelligent energy management systems that will be necessary to meet the demands of an energy model increasingly dependent on renewable sources of energy.

Therefore, the following actions are proposed:

- Implementation of the necessary infrastructure for the use of electric vehicles on the regular interurban public transport lines of Mallorca.

- Infrastructure for electric vehicles to be used as public transport in other territorial areas.

- Establishing fast charging points for electric vehicles in the territorial area of the islands.
