The project

Transport is one of the main sources of emissions in urban and tourist areas in the Balearic Islands. Faced with this challenge, the Balearic Government is launching a subsidy scheme for the purchase of electric bicycles and scooters, as part of the decarbonisation strategy set out in the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition.

With a public budget of 5 million euros from the ITS fund, the project plans to fund up to half of the cost of these micro-mobility vehicles. The scheme will be open to both private individuals and rental companies, giving priority to initiatives that include models adapted for people with reduced mobility.

The public call will be carried out over several years, and will require the subsidised vehicles to include the "Illes Sostenibles” corporate image, with the aim of highlighting the commitment to energy transition. In addition to promoting a cleaner transport model, the measure aims to boost emerging sectors such as the maintenance and rental of electric PMVs.

Beyond reducing emissions and decongesting traffic in urban areas, the Government also hopes that this policy will act as a lever for cultural change. The electrification of everyday travel, especially in coastal and tourist-crowded areas, is seen as a necessary step towards more responsible and resilient mobility.
